I'm here, too! About those kickass heroines...Hi, ladies! I saw your notes on the kickass heroine...
When people mention the term 'kickass heroine', I think most people's perception IS that she's a weapon-toting/ballbuster. If you say a heroine is very 'strong' she could be anything from 'true kickass' to a woman who knows her own mind and isn't afraid to speak it. :)
Since I write very alpha males I've always paired them with strong heroines. Some are kickass (in the 'true' definition of kickass) and others are just very strong-willed women who make sure they give their alpha males just as good as they get.
Jax in my second vampire book A TASTE FOR REVENGE has been, by FAR, the most kickass (in a pure physical sense) heroine I've written. So I paired her with a kickass hero who has always approached problems in a physical way...but then Ian finds himself wandering about Jax's emotions and he tries his best to get her to voice them.
Rose in my 3rd vampire book A TASTE FOR CONTROL is another strong heroine I've written. Whereas Jax was strong in a physical sense, Rose is has a lock on her mental/emotional self-control...which makes her a very intriguing person to a vampire who has always been able to read everyone's minds. Let's just say, Duncan has his hands full with Rose from the first moment he meets her.
In my mind, a strong, (READ: kickass) heroine doesn't have to carry a gun or know martial arts. It's the depth of her character, the way she handles the hard knocks of life and especially how she interacts with an equally strong-willed hero that conveys her 'kickass' personality.
And as far as being saved...who's to say the heroine can't do the saving in the story? Plus, there's many ways one can be saved...from emotional to physical and everything in between. ;)
